Coffee with the Pastors
If you are considering membership at First Methodist, the first step is to attend Coffee with the Pastors, where you’ll learn more about the church, get to know our pastors and staff, and review expectations regarding membership.
Coffee with the Pastors sessions occur approximately four times a year, usually meeting in the Sanctuary Parlor on the second floor of the Sanctuary building. A typical session includes a small group and lasts about two hours. Childcare can be arranged if necessary, just let one of the pastors or the church office know ahead of time.
Youth who were baptized as infants have the opportunity to publicly confirm the vows made on their behalf. Are you a 6th grade student ready to grow deeper in your faith? We would love to have you join us on the Confirmation Journey!
Sixth-graders will begin the process of confirmation in the Fall of each year.
For any questions, please contact Maggi Cowan at 601.924.6671
“Confirmation” is the time when a personal decision is made to confirm the vows of our baptism. At First Methodist, this happens as students in 6th grade join together for a semester of exploring who Christ is, what it means to know Him through a life-long relationship, and how we follow Him as United Methodists. The Confirmation then takes place in a ceremony of students publicly declaring their commitment to Christ and desire to become full adult members of our church family. Our first prayer is that each student involved will commit to a real and personal faith. Our second prayer is that they will begin to cherish the rich heritage we have as United Methodists. This includes the building of relationships with peers and adults who will support them in their faith.
Confirmation is not simply a “rite of passage.” Nor, just a class to complete. It is a step in a life-long journey of pursuing the heights depths and widths of God’s love and making a vow to live in relationship with Him for the rest of our life!
Holy Baptism is a Covenant between an individual and God. It is God’s word to us, proclaiming our adoption by grace and our word to God, promising our response of faith and love.
First Methodist welcomes your inquiry about the Sacrament of Baptism and we look forward to assisting your family with planning this special day. It is our desire to make your baptism a most memorable occasion.
Persons of all ages can be baptized at First United Methodist. Non- members are encouraged to seek membership as soon as possible after being baptized. We baptize by sprinkling Holy Water and make the sign of the cross on the forehead with anointing oil to invite the presence of the Holy Spirit.
The United Methodist Church recognizes baptisms from other faiths and churches and therefore does not “re-baptize”.
At First Methodist, we are Christians who are excited to be part of the United Methodist Church. Read more..
